The Way of the Wolf

“I’m nervous,” admitted Cally, standing next to Faylana outside the door to Ser Talbot’s cabin.

Faylana shifted the cooing bundle of Garth in her arms. The half-orc tot could crawl like a little bug when he was excited and cry like a demon when he was upset, but he was relaxed and nearly asleep in Faylana’s arms. She kissed him on his green forehead and then smiled at Cally.

“It will be alright, my love,” said Faylana. “Ser Talbot is a gentleman. Even when the beast takes hold of him, he will not hurt either of us or Garth. He just wants to meet my – our – child. Because he loves me.”

Cally’s cheeks grew a little hotter at the thought of another man loving Faylana. Then again, Cally wasn’t a man at all. Not at the moment. Whatever her past with Faylana, she had a different future with the elf to look forward to.

“Alright,” said Cally. “I just don’t want things to move so fast. Everything has been… changing.”

“You are certainly right there,” chuckled Faylana, glancing over at Cally’s ample cleavage. “Don’t worry, my love. I will not leave you. In fact, I think I love you more than ever.”

“Really?” Cally was still smiling as Faylana finally knocked on the door.

The door opened almost immediately and there stood Ser Talbot in his green doublet and brown trousers. A collar of loose white opened enough to reveal a tuft of his chest hair. Cally was surprised by the man. Bewitched by his intense, dark eyes, curly black hair, and the physique of a workman rather than a nobleman.

“Ah! What’s this?” said Ser Talbot, a smile spreading upon his face. “My favorite elf returns!”

“Oh, Arthur, how many elves do you know?” giggled Faylana, instantly transformed into a blushing schoolgirl. Cally wanted to act the same. She experienced a fluttering exhilaration in her tummy at being in the presence of the handsome knight.

“You are the only one, I’ll confess,” said Ser Talbot with a wink. “Oh, and who is this? The picture of loveliness.”

He took Cally’s hand and kissed it before Cally could even properly react.

“That is Cally,” said Faylana, trying to explain. “She is my… she is a very, very close friend. I thought you would like to meet her as well.”

“Ah, but such a beauty must have grown upon the branches of the same tree as you, Faylana!” laughed Ser Talbot. “Well, Cally, any friend of Faylana is welcome! Come in, come in. My cabin is small but make yourself comfortable. Is that the boy in your arms?”

“Yes, Garth,” said Faylana, holding the bundled tot out to Ser Talbot.

Cally watched as the knight scooped him up and drew back the blanket to have a look.

“Ahhhh! A handsome young lad! Takes after his mother as much as his father, I see!”

Garth’s eyes fluttered open. When the little half-orc saw Ser Talbot the baby’s face contorted unhappily and he began to cry. His crying grew louder and filled the small cabin with Garth’s hysterical wailing.
